Friends of St Oswald's Christmas Carol

On the 6th and 7th of December 2013 St. Oswald’s Church was the venue for the production of a cleverly modified version of The Christmas Carol which played to a full audience on both nights. Refreshments were provided on admission and a hot supper following the performance. It was a joy to see the church filled to capacity with all ages of local residents and the surrounding areas on both nights.

As chairman of FOSO I write on behalf of the committee some of who performed and assisted and to thank everyone involved. It is not possible to mention each performer and assistants, there being some 50 plus, but David Morris as Scrooge, Richard Staley as Bob Cratchit to name two plus the children of the village school would have received plaudits from the West End for their excellence.

Behind the scenes there were many others who gave up their valuable time to help make the event so successful.  I would also like to thank the sponsors for their financial help. A very special thanks goes to Joan Houston who conceived the idea, wrote and directed the play. This is her second successful venture the first being Tam O’Shanter last year. Most grateful thanks to Judith Todd who seamlessly produced and staged managed the show with the many props constructed by her husband Richard. Very grateful thanks are also due to the supper ladies for their amazing culinary skills in catering for so many, namely Sally Metcalfe-Gibson, June Ellis and Carole Clayton.

A very successful event and I thank everyone for their financial support to help us maintain the fabric of this unique church.

Chris

Gilbertine Ruins

In the grounds of St Oswald's there are some Gilbertine ruins which have been excavated to form a very impressive glimpse of history.

Gilbertine Monastic Ruins, St Oswald's Church, Ravenstonedale

Strictly speaking it was not a monastery but a house.
